Elasticity of Compressed Emulsions.

چکیده
The elastic shear modulus of monodisperse emulsions is shown to exhibit a universal dependence on droplet volume fraction f when scaled by the Laplace pressure of the droplets, increasing as fsf 2 fcd, where fc ø 0.635, the value of random close packing of solid spheres. Surprisingly the osmotic pressure required to compress the emulsions to increase f is nearly the same as the shear modulus over a large range of volume fraction, while the bulk osmotic modulus differs significantly. Models based on the structural disorder of the emulsions are discussed to account for these data.

Model for the elasticity of compressed emulsions.
We present a new model to describe the unusual elastic properties of compressed emulsions. The response of a single droplet under compression is investigated numerically for different Wigner-Seitz cells. The response is softer than harmonic, and depends on the coordination number of the droplet. Using these results, we propose a new effective interdroplet potential which is used to determine th...
متن کاملLocal structure controls the nonaffine shear and bulk moduli of disordered solids
Paradigmatic model systems, which are used to study the mechanical response of matter, are random networks of point-atoms, random sphere packings, or simple crystal lattices; all of these models assume central-force interactions between particles/atoms. Each of these models differs in the spatial arrangement and the correlations among particles. In turn, this is reflected in the widely differen...

Assemblies of purely repulsive and frictionless particles, display very curious elastic properties near the jamming transition where the overlap between particles vanish. Although such systems do not contain the long and cross-linked polymeric chains characterizing a rubber, they behave macroscopically in a similar way: the shear modulus G can become negligible in comparison with the bulk modul...
متن کاملViscoelastic Behavior of Olive Oil-in-Water Emulsion Stabilized By Sucrose Fatty Acid Esters
Applied Rheology Volume 21 · Issue 5 Abstract: The rheological behavior of the olive oil-in-water emulsions has been studied by varying the oil to water ratio as well as the surfactant concentration. The viscoelastic property of the olive oil emulsions was investigated with a cone-and-plate system, using a Bohlin C-VOR Rheometer. The obtained results indicated that the emulsions with greater oi...
متن کاملA Contact Problem of an Elastic Layer Compressed by Two Punches of Different Radii
The elasticity mixed boundary values problems dealing with half-space contact are generally well resolved. A large number of these solutions are obtained by using the integral transformation method and methods based the integral equations. However, the problems of finite layer thicknesses are less investigated, despite their practical interests. This study resolves a quasi-stationary problem of...
